The official national sport of India is Field Hockey. Apparently the more popular sport however is Cricket. Cricket is a game that originated in England and it can take up to five days to play one game which is just a little longer than a New York Yankee baseball game. If you've watched one or two you know what I mean.
Certainly every sport has it nuances and its own unique terms and Cricket is no different. The terms seem unusual to us here in the United States since cricket isn’t really a high school sport but if your are a avid fan the terms seem as normal as a slam dunk, nickel defense, infield dinger or birdie. As a matter of fact, they even have a bird related term called a duck, okay technically it’s a fowl related term but it still flies, the duck not the term. They even have a golden duck as a term which sort of reminds me of the term double eagle something I have never experienced personally.
Cricket has 11 players like American football and some common terms with American baseball like innings and fielders but it also the term nightwatchman who actually bats toward the end of the day when the daylight is fading. Bowlers are equivalent to baseball’s pitchers but there are some other odd position names like gully, wicketkeeper, square leg and silly mid off. See what I mean, odd?
