There are only a couple of things that are easily identified by letters that are short for the actual word. BBQ is the most famous and actually the only one I can think of at the moment. BBQ is of course short for barbecue. BBQ is not really an acronym.
Acronyms are words formed by the initials of other words. If you’re a regular reader, I know what you’re thinking, more English lessons, really? But hey I’ve done a lot of history I need to balance out my teaching er… writing. A couple of good examples are scuba and laser, scuba stands for self contained underwater breathing apparatus and laser is light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation. Both of those are quite a mouthful and you can see why the acronym is around.
Acronyms are not to be confused with initials like F.B.I. The difference is you don’t say febes when talking about the F.B.I., I guess you could but nobody would have a clue to what you were talking about. Acronyms are words that are formed by initials and initials are a set of letters formed by words.
You see, so BBQ isn’t really an acronym or initials, it is letters that make up a word that look very much like the word that the letters are in. I guess it is technically an abbreviation and if I had thought of that information about two paragraphs ago I could have saved you some reading but a little education on acronyms seems okay.
